How to Prepare for a Residential Handyman Project

How to Prepare for a Residential Handyman Project

A little preparation before your handyman arrives can save you time, money, and frustration. Whether it's a single repair or a full punch list of updates, the smoother your project starts, the better it finishes. Here's exactly how to get ready — based on what we wish every customer knew before we show up.

1. Make a Clear List

Walk through your home with a notepad or your phone and write down every task you want addressed. Big or small. Don't assume we'll notice that loose towel bar or the outlet cover that's crooked — tell us. A clear list lets us quote accurately, bring the right tools, and knock everything out in one visit instead of scheduling a second trip.

2. Take Photos and Send Them Over

A photo tells us more than a description ever will. Before you call, snap pictures of the problem areas from a few angles. Include close-ups of any hardware, model numbers, or damage. If you text or email these ahead of time, we can quote the job faster and order any specialty parts before we arrive. This is the single biggest thing customers can do to speed up their projects.

3. Know What You Want — and What You Don't

Sometimes a repair isn't the only option. A cracked tile could be patched or replaced. A scuffed wall could be touched up or fully repainted. Think about the outcome you want before we arrive. If you're not sure, that's fine — we'll walk you through the options and trade-offs. But the clearer you are about your goals, the less back-and-forth you'll have during the job.

4. Clear the Work Area

Move furniture, rugs, and anything fragile out of the workspace before we arrive. For bathroom repairs, empty the counters. For TV mounting, clear the wall and any nearby media stands. For kitchen work, pull items out of the cabinets we'll be working on. Not only does this speed up the job, it protects your belongings from accidental damage. If you need help moving something heavy, just let us know in advance.

5. Source Your Own Materials (Or Ask Us To)

For items with specific brands, styles, or colors — cabinet hardware, light fixtures, faucets, paint — it's usually best for you to pick and buy them yourself. That way you get exactly what you want. For generic supplies (screws, drywall, caulk, standard plumbing parts), we bring what's needed and bill materials separately. When in doubt, ask. We're happy to shop for items and save you the trip, or stick to what you provide.

6. Plan for Pets and Kids

Power tools are loud. Open doors are an escape route for curious pets. Dust and debris aren't great for small lungs. If possible, keep pets in a closed room during the work, and plan for kids to be occupied elsewhere. We love meeting the family at the start of the job — but for the actual work, a quieter house means we finish faster and safer.

7. Be Available for Questions

You don't need to hover, but do stay reachable for the first 15 minutes of a job and any time a decision comes up. We might find a surprise — water damage behind a tile, a stripped screw, a wall that's not the type we expected — and we'll need a quick answer to keep going. A phone call delay of even an hour can throw off our schedule for the day.

8. Understand How We Quote

Most handyman jobs are quoted either flat-rate (one price for the whole job) or hourly with a minimum. For a long punch list of small items, hourly usually makes more sense and saves you money. For a specific big task — like mounting a TV or installing a door lock — flat-rate is common. Ask us which applies before we start so there are no surprises when we hand you the invoice.

9. Think Ahead: Bundle Small Jobs

If you have multiple small tasks, save them up and bundle them into one visit. Two trips for two separate jobs usually costs more than one trip for both. Even if a task isn't urgent, adding it to the list while we're already on-site is the cheapest way to get it done. We'd rather knock out ten small things in one visit than come back five times.

10. Trust the Process

A good handyman takes the time to do it right. If we say a job needs an extra ten minutes to prep properly, or we suggest a different approach than you planned, it's because experience has taught us what lasts. Ask questions, get second opinions when you need them, but remember — you're hiring us for our judgment as much as our hands.
