7 Simple Home Solutions for Everyday Problems

Every home has its quirks. A door that squeaks, a faucet that drips, a drawer that sticks — these small annoyances pile up until they feel impossible to ignore. The good news is that most everyday household problems have simple fixes you can tackle in under an hour. Here are the seven most common issues we see in Miami homes, and exactly how to fix them.

1. Squeaky Door Hinges

A squeaky door is almost always caused by friction between a dry hinge pin and the hinge barrel. Lift the pin out with a flathead screwdriver, wipe it clean with a rag, and apply a thin coat of white lithium grease or a silicone-based lubricant. Avoid WD-40 for long-term fixes — it attracts dust. Slide the pin back in and swing the door a few times to work the lubricant into the joint.

2. Running Toilet

If you hear water trickling long after a flush, the flapper inside your toilet tank has likely worn out. Shut off the water supply at the valve behind the toilet, flush to drain the tank, and unclip the old flapper. A replacement costs about five dollars at any hardware store. Clip the new one into place, reconnect the chain, and turn the water back on. This single fix can save hundreds of gallons of water a month.

3. Sticky Kitchen Drawer

Drawers bind when the glides collect grime or the track alignment shifts. Pull the drawer all the way out, vacuum the rails, and wipe them down with a damp cloth. Rub a bar of paraffin wax or a candle along the contact surfaces — never use oil, which attracts more dirt. Slide the drawer back in and it should glide smoothly again.

4. Loose Cabinet Handle

A handle that keeps coming loose is usually a stripped screw hole. Remove the handle, stuff a toothpick dipped in wood glue into the hole, and snap off the end flush with the surface. Let it dry for 30 minutes, then drive the screw back in. The new fibers give the screw fresh material to grip.

5. Slow-Draining Sink

Before you reach for chemical drain cleaners, try a mix of half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Plug the drain and let it fizz for 15 minutes, then flush with a full kettle of boiling water. For stubborn clogs, unscrew the P-trap under the sink (keep a bucket handy) and clear the gunk manually.

6. Drywall Holes from Picture Hangers

Small nail holes disappear in minutes with spackle and a putty knife. Dab a small amount into the hole, scrape the excess flat, and let it dry. A light sanding and a touch-up of paint and the wall looks untouched. For holes larger than a quarter, you'll want a mesh patch kit or a professional drywall repair.

7. Loose Toilet Seat

Most toilet seats are held on by two plastic bolts under flip-up caps at the back. Open the caps, tighten the bolts by hand (no tools needed for most), and the seat will feel solid again. If the bolts are corroded, a full replacement seat costs around fifteen dollars and installs in five minutes.
